TVS Jupiter CNG: World’s first CNG scooter, will come to India with 140 miles range!

TVS Jupiter CNG: CNG two-wheelers have a special charm in India. For some reason, it is seen as one of the most promising alternative fuel options in the country. Last year, we saw the world’s first CNG motorcycle, the Bajaj Freedom 125. Now, TVS has introduced the world’s first CNG scooter using the same technology.

The scooter is a variant of TVS’ popular model ‘Jupiter’ and was introduced at this year’s India Mobility Expo. The TVS Jupiter has been one of the best-selling scooters in India, so TVS has added a CNG tank to an already successful product.

TVS Jupiter CNG Scooter Features

TVS Jupiter CNG Scooter Features

The Bajaj Freedom 125 had a dual fuel setup, with a 2-kg CNG tank and a 2-litre petrol tank. The Jupiter has also adopted a similar setup, with a 2-litre petrol tank and a 1.4-kg CNG cylinder.

Thanks to this petrol-CNG setup, the scooter gets a combined range of up to 140 miles (226 km). If driven only on CNG, the mileage is claimed to be 52 miles (84 km) per kg of CNG.

The CNG tank is located under the seat, where most petrol scooters usually have storage space. Because of this, one of the biggest selling points of the Jupiter 125 scooter—its 33-litre under-seat storage space—is not available here.

The CNG fill nozzle is also under the seat, but that is not a big hassle, as you have to get off the scooter anyway to fill CNG. The fuel fill cap is at the proper place, i.e., in the front apron.

CNG and petrol mode switch

This scooter has a button, by pressing which you can switch between CNG and petrol mode. Apart from this, TVS’s own ‘eco-thrust’ fuel injection and ‘intelliGO’ start-stop technology are also present.

Engine and Performance

Engine and Performance

The scooter is powered by an air-cooled, single-cylinder, 124.8-cc bi-fuel engine that produces 7.2 horsepower (hp) and 9.4 Nm of peak torque. This is slightly less than the petrol-only Jupiter 125, which has 8.1 hp and 10.5 Nm of torque. The scooter also gets a CVT automatic gearbox and a top speed of 50 mph (80.5 km/h).

Additional Features

This scooter is not just a slightly greener ride but also comes with a few extra features. It gets features like a side stand indicator, an all-in-one lock, a USB charging port, and an LED headlight. Its semi-digital instrument cluster gets several important readouts.

The Jupiter 125 also gets a large seat, which is considered to be the largest in the 125-cc class. No problem for the big size!

Price and launch timeline

The petrol Jupiter 125 is priced between INR79,540 (US$918) and INR90,721 (US$1,050). The CNG variant is likely to be priced slightly higher.

At the moment, there is no official timeline for a commercial launch, but it is expected to be launched by the end of 2025, although it will be available only in India.

Conclusion

When launched, this scooter will not only establish a strong position for TVS in sustainable two-wheeler innovation but will also compete with scooters like the Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG. Although CNG-powered engines still emit greenhouse gases, they emit around 20% less than petrol. However, emissions from the extraction, processing, and distribution of CNG have not been taken into account.
