For what is this automatic check of $500?

It is in relation to a new scheme the Pennsylvania state government has announced, called the “Money Match Program.” The scheme has the main function of returning amounts directly to people who are entitled to their unclaimed property without them having to apply.
This initiative is officially sanctioned by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and the general assembly of the state.
What is that money match program?
The “Money Match” program finds the old and even missed assets or benefits that people have (for example, savings account balances, deposits, checks, etc.) and automatically returns them to their rightful owners.
In this state, the website explains it as follows:
- “This is a very new process by which the Pennsylvania Treasury Department gives back the unclaimed property rightfully to its owners”.
- The Department of Treasury under this scheme would be issuing a person direct payment without requiring any application process when it is satisfied that certain criteria are met.
What were the eligibility conditions?
In a press release, the Pennsylvania Treasury Department said that they put out the eligible individuals through a rigorous identification and verification process. Under this:
- The property had to be owned by a single person
- That property was to be valued $500 or less
Those who have previously been eligible under this scheme have already mailed out notice letters in January 2025, telling them they will receive money.
Is this a scam?
No. It was confirmed by State Treasurer Stacy Garrity herself that it was not a scam.
In her own words:
- “I’m very happy that this is being returned to hardworking Pennsylvanians.”
- Then she added, “We couldn’t have done this without the encouragement of the assemblies with the help of the governor for this plan to be realized and the bureaucracy removed from government processes generally.”
Since when is the money being received?
Because of these notification letters sent in January, those eligible have had their mailboxes filled in the last few weeks with checks being issued up to $500. The payments are being sent either directly through mail or to their bank accounts.
Help doesn’t only come from Pennsylvania, other states are also getting it
Ohio also runs a “Guaranteed Income” program, just like Pennsylvania. Through this program, monthly support of around $500 is given to single mothers per month until the year’s end.
This program is being sponsored by:
- Motherful (Non-profit organization)
- RISE Together Innovation Institute
- up together

Who is included in this scheme?
Thirty-two single mothers were included in this scheme in December 2024. All of them reside in and around Columbus, and their household annual income level is 80 percent or less of the median income.
By the U.S. Census Bureau, this income is not more than $65,327 per annum.
What is its Purpose?
The scheme does not only intend to give monetary support but also sends a thriving social message.
- Danielle Syndor, the CEO of RISE Together, said:
“When we give unconditional financial help to the mothers, we bring real changes to her finances and the well-being of her family.”
What message do such schemes convey?
- Governments are now looking to bypass bureaucracy directly and provide assistance.
- People who qualify are benefiting without qualification, without paperwork.
- Promoting social equality and financial stability.
Conclusion
Be it Pennsylvania’s “Money Match” program or Ohio’s “Guaranteed Income,” the plans have proved that with honesty between the government and social organizations, financial help can be delivered without conditions and without delay to the public.
So if you happen to be in America, especially in Pennsylvania or Ohio, check whether you qualify for these programs or not. You may just receive that surprise check of $500 at your door.
