These phones identified as Pixel smartphones: the Pixel 6 series, the Pixel 7, and now the Pixel 8 series all had one integral design feature-the camera bar. The entire rear panel of the phone was covered by this individual bar, and inside that bar, the various camera lenses and sensors were embedded. Not that the phone was put on a desk as most smartphones would “dangle” with protruding camera lens pieces, but the major advantage was that the phone could be easily put into a stable position on a desk.
It provided stability in the design and stable silhouette. Thus, these phones were easily and quickly recognizable as Google Pixels. With just a glance at any Pixel phone, you could know almost immediately that it belonged to the Pixel family.
Disappearance of the Pixel Bar
With the Pixel Fold, this design was refuted. With the Pixel Fold, which was released along with the Pixel 8, the design bar could not be extended to either side because there was no room for the camera bar when the phone was open. But when the phone was closed, the same old design was possible, yet Google changed the design. While the camera bar was easily identifiable on a closed phone, the corners of it were rounded. Now that this so-called outstanding design is slowly becoming mainstream and losing its uniqueness from other phones, it has proven to be more of a generic design.
The Pixel 9 series ushered in a further revolution in this direction. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold specifically substituted the entire camera bar by an exclusive island. Now, Google is heading further to make its more generic design of its devices as a whole.
Alterations in Pixel 9a
A multitude of images of the leaked Pixel 9a turned out to incorporate pictures of the smartphone’s back covers. Different images show the dual camera setup and LED flash, but nothing more than that, not even a camera bar that identifies it as a Pixel phone. There is no long island tying it to the Pixel 9 family.
What the Pixel 9a omits
- Since the phone is still not released, we can only comment on speculation. If Google keeps on heading that way, it is engineering at its best. As we see, even Samsung and Apple are heading towards thinner phones losing themselves as a major point at selling smartphones. This is indeed an excellent opportunity for Google to flaunt its prowess.
- This will come at the cost of the physical identity of the Pixel, though. In a market full of identical slabs of glass with an odd bulge at the back, Google had created its own identity which was easily recognizable for use by both journalists and the general public. This identity could not simply be erased even as the Pixel 9 team tried to change it up a bit.
- Fad after fad may come and go, but style is always existent. The camera bar gave a certain style to Google that was unique unto itself. Now, for the lure of a thinner phone, that may be cast aside.
Conclusion
The Google Pixel 9a is a new brave cut into the smartphone design, breaking away, though not entirely, from the camera bar in favor of a sleeker look. It does cater to the present high fashion of thin and sleek casing; however, this trend will soon trump the very interesting distinctness that rendered Pixel smartphones such an easy identifier. The Pixel 9a still holds much promise-a device that is affordable and brings out excellent performance in engineering. Affordable excellence then reminds us that such quality has changed along with changes in the world of technology and high through-put for the user experience.
